Gateway Foundation, now operating as Alpharus Health, is a Chicago-based nonprofit treatment provider that has spent nearly six decades helping people recover from substance use, mental health, and gambling disorders. They treat alcohol use disorder and addiction to opioids such as fentanyl and kratom, as well as stimulants, marijuana, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and hallucinogens, with attention to co-occurring medical and mental health conditions. Care starts with an assessment to match each person to the right level of treatment, which can include 24/7 residential withdrawal management (detox), residential treatment, outpatient programming while living at home, and confidential virtual sessions with a clinician. They accept most major insurance plans and offer financial assistance options to make treatment more reachable.

During detox, clinical staff monitor patients around the clock, provide medications to ease opioid and alcohol withdrawal, and introduce therapy early to help with lingering anxiety, restlessness, and sleep problems. Their medication-assisted recovery program pairs counseling with FDA-approved medications such as buprenorphine (Suboxone) and naltrexone (Vivitrol), and while they don’t prescribe methadone, patients already on it may be able to continue through coordination with their outside provider. Treatment also explores how trauma, behavior patterns, and mental health feed into substance use, with therapy, specialty programs, DUI services, support groups, and an alumni network available. They also run a corrections division that delivers substance use treatment during incarceration and helps people prepare for reentry after release.
