About Friend Family Health Center
Friend Health, formerly known as Friend Family Health Center, is a federally qualified community health center network serving medically underserved neighborhoods across Chicago’s South and Southwest Sides. Since opening in 1997, they have focused on affordable, culturally appropriate whole-person care, offering substance use disorder services alongside primary care, mental health and psychiatry, women’s and children’s health, and dentistry. Their addiction services draw on the history of Human Resources Development Institute, a Chicago behavioral health provider founded in 1974 that merged into Friend Health in 2017. That organization worked with alcohol and drug use, gambling addiction, HIV/AIDS, and youth and family needs.
Behavioral health care is delivered by licensed clinical social workers, licensed clinical professional counselors, and psychiatrists who see patients of every age. Their work includes mental health therapy, family counseling, support around domestic violence, and substance use treatment. Visits may take place in person or by phone or video, which can make ongoing care easier to keep up with. Patients can also tap into practical supports under the same roof, including social work assessments, care coordination that connects people with community resources and support groups, HIV and infectious disease care, help enrolling in Medicaid or Marketplace insurance, an in-house pharmacy offering medication counseling, and free legal assistance through a medical-legal partnership.
