About Freedom House Recovery Center

Freedom House Recovery Center is a nonprofit behavioral health organization that has served Durham and nearby North Carolina communities since 1974, with clinics in Durham, Orange, Person, and Warren counties. They treat substance use and mental health together through an integrated, person-centered model, working with people who use alcohol, opioids, stimulants, sedatives, cannabis, hallucinogens, inhalants, and nicotine. Care spans outpatient therapy, a Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Program (SAIOP), short-term facility-based crisis stabilization, mobile crisis response, long-term residential treatment, and ongoing care management. Many clients follow a roughly 12-month step-down path that moves from assessment through intensive outpatient and standard outpatient care, then into continued connection after formal treatment ends.

At the outpatient clinics, children, adolescents, and adults can receive comprehensive clinical assessments, psychiatric evaluations, individual, family, and group therapy, medication management, and peer support, with telehealth available. The clinics also handle North Carolina DWI/DMV evaluations and treatment, along with programs tied to the criminal justice system, and they address co-occurring conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and grief. The residential program offers adults up to six months in gender-specific sober homes with around-the-clock staff, daily group and individual therapy, relapse prevention, job readiness, and life skills training; applicants need a primary substance use diagnosis and at least seven days without use. Residents give up personal phones and computers during their stay, and Medicaid and state funding cover the residential program, which helps keep it within reach for people with limited financial resources.
