About Freedom House
Freedom House is a Christ-centered, long-term residential recovery program in Greensboro, North Carolina, where mothers struggling with drug or alcohol addiction can live alongside their children, age 10 and under, throughout treatment. Founded in 2006 as a nonprofit, they serve women 21 and older, including pregnant women and mothers working to regain custody, and they welcome applicants from across the state and the country. The residential program lasts 9 to 12 months and moves through four phases aimed at the root causes of addiction, followed by up to a year of rent-free aftercare housing. There is no insurance requirement or monthly tuition, just a one-time $750 admission fee, and prescription medications are the only ongoing expense.
Each woman follows a personalized plan that includes individual and group therapy, recovery classes, and life-skills work, built on a 12-step foundation alongside daily Bible study, worship, and mentorship. Parenting sits at the center of daily life, with mothers rebuilding routines like family meals and bedtimes while staff coordinate local daycare and school enrollment for the kids. Residents gain job experience at three thrift stores and a farm on 110 acres, and they also get transportation to Celebrate Recovery and to medical, dental, and legal appointments, plus coaching on budgeting, saving, and buying a car. In aftercare, graduates keep access to therapy, evening support groups, and mentoring while they secure permanent housing and work, and many go on to mentor newer residents.
