About Four Directions Treatment and
Four Directions Treatment & Recovery Center is a tribally run substance use program in Mescalero, New Mexico, established by the Mescalero Apache Tribe in the 1970s. They serve adults who are enrolled members of a federally recognized tribe or pueblo and are struggling with alcohol or drug addiction. Through Indian Health Service grant funding, they offer inpatient and outpatient treatment at no cost, with 90-day and 180-day program lengths. Care addresses the educational, physical, spiritual, mental, and moral sides of recovery, and a 12-week aftercare program supports ongoing sobriety.
Clinical services include individual and group counseling, process groups, and substance abuse education. Specialty groups cover trauma and resiliency, relationships, anger management, and stress management, and parenting classes, life skills, and health education are also part of the program. Traditional groups and spiritual 12-Step study sit alongside AA and NA meetings, and case management, screening and assessment, referrals, and relapse prevention round out the services. Admission requires proof of tribal enrollment, such as a Certificate of Indian Blood, a qualifying diagnosis, a physical exam confirming medical stability, and an age of at least 18.
