About Ford Street Project
Ford Street Project is a nonprofit in Ukiah, California, that has supported people struggling with addiction and homelessness in Mendocino County since 1974, when they began as the Mendocino Alcohol Project. Their substance use treatment is delivered through the Ukiah Recovery Center, which is state-licensed and offers social model withdrawal management, residential treatment, and outpatient care. Their approach centers on building practical skills, respecting each person’s background, and helping clients break the patterns that have kept them stuck. Beyond treatment, they run a community food bank, emergency shelter for families, long-term affordable housing, and a sober living environment, which gives clients access to wider support as they stabilize.
Detox typically lasts three to fourteen days in a round-the-clock, non-medical setting. Residential stays can be short-term at about 30 days or extended longer, with daily groups, weekly one-on-one counseling, social outings, and offsite 12-Step meetings. Residents also take vocational classes in a certified organic garden and a commercial kitchen. Outpatient clients commit to at least four months of substance use education and relapse prevention groups one to three times a week, plus regular individual sessions. Every program includes drug testing and case management for housing, medical, and other referrals, and clients who use FDA-approved medications such as buprenorphine or naltrexone are supported, though there is no on-site MAT clinic. Funding referrals, private pay, and Partnership Health Plan of California for residents of eligible counties are accepted.
