First Step House is a nonprofit behavioral health and housing provider in Salt Lake City whose roots go back to a small recovery home founded in 1958. They focus on people whose lives have been upended by addiction, homelessness, or incarceration, with particular expertise in co-occurring substance use and mental health conditions. Their men’s residential and outpatient programs primarily serve men at moderate to high risk of criminal behavior, though a criminal record isn’t required, and clients progress from residential care into sober housing and then back into independent community living. Most admissions come through referrals from courts, probation, public defenders, homeless resource centers, and the VA, but self-referrals are accepted, with a typical two- to four-week wait for a bed and no walk-in assessments.

Beyond core treatment, clients can draw on wraparound support that includes medical care, case management, peer support, employment help, and a Long-Term Recovery Management program that keeps graduates connected through service work, meetings, and social activities like weekly softball. A dedicated veterans track includes Valor House, which offers transitional housing for male and female veterans facing homelessness, and a reentry program helps people coming out of incarceration break the cycle of addiction and arrest. For those with serious mental or behavioral health conditions, they operate permanent supportive housing and an Assertive Community Treatment team that brings psychiatric care and case management to where people live. Most clients are funded through Medicaid, Medicare, the VA, or Salt Lake County Behavioral Health, and a sliding-scale fee based on income and family size is available for those without coverage.
