About First Choice Community Healthcare

First Choice Community Healthcare is a nonprofit, federally qualified community health center system based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with nine health centers across three counties in the greater Albuquerque area. For over 50 years they have provided primary medical, dental, and behavioral health care, and they build substance use treatment into that same primary care setting. Their approach rejects blame and shame in favor of treatment and support, and they help people dealing with opioids, alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamines, benzodiazepines, and other substances. Care is available to everyone regardless of income or insurance status, with a sliding fee discount program and free help applying for or renewing Medicaid.

The core of their substance use program is outpatient medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD), prescribed by their medical providers and paired with individual and group therapy. Behavioral health therapists and psychiatric nurse practitioners provide counseling and mental health treatment, while community health workers help patients connect with resources for social needs that can get in the way of recovery. Each patient’s care team works together on a personalized plan, and families can be involved in addressing the problems addiction creates at home. Their practical goals are to help people stay alive, stay in treatment, find and keep work, and remain a full part of their families.
