About Family Outreach Center
Family Outreach Center is a community behavioral health organization based in Grand Rapids that also serves Muskegon County, Michigan, offering mental health and substance use care to adults, children, and families. Since 1979, they have focused on low-income, underinsured, and uninsured households and provide services regardless of ability to pay. Their substance use care includes general outpatient counseling and an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for people whose primary concern is a substance use disorder, often alongside depression, anxiety, or other co-occurring conditions. Daytime and evening appointments help people fit treatment around work, school, and family obligations.
Beyond office-based care, they run a Recovery Management program that works with people in the community, including in Muskegon, to manage addiction and co-occurring mental health issues over time. Their Family Engagement Program sends a team into the home to address substance use as a family pattern, and they also provide screening, crisis intervention, diversion, and individual substance use counseling inside the Kent County and Muskegon County jails. Trauma-informed care is a major emphasis, with many clinicians trained in EMDR for adults and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) for children, teens, and their caregivers. Clients also work with case managers and peer support specialists, and the approach builds on each person’s strengths while respecting their culture and beliefs.
