About Family Center Inc

The Family Center is a Brooklyn-based nonprofit serving individuals and families across New York City who are coping with life-altering events such as serious illness, disability, family crisis, or loss. They take a whole-person, whole-family approach, combining social services, free civil legal help, and mental health care so that families can regain stability and plan for the long term. Services are confidential and low or no cost, are tailored to each household, and often include home visits. Their work has deep roots in supporting New Yorkers affected by HIV, along with families facing breast cancer and other medically fragile circumstances.

Their family support team provides case management, advocacy, benefits assistance, and referrals to other agencies, along with parenting programs such as Parenting Journey and the Positive Parenting Program (Triple P). Licensed clinicians offer psychological and psychiatric services for children, teens, and families working through trauma, grief, and other challenges, and psychosocial counseling is available for people impacted by HIV. Through the Legal Wellness Institute, attorneys help with eviction prevention, public benefits, custody and other family law matters, and lifetime planning, and they will meet clients at home or in the hospital when travel isn’t possible. Specialized projects cover breast cancer-affected families, young adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities, financial literacy, and benefits counseling for people living with HIV.
