About Fam Service and Guidance Ctr of Topeka
Family Service & Guidance Center (FSGC) is a nonprofit community mental health center in Topeka, Kansas, that has supported children, teens, and families since 1904. They help people work through depression, anxiety, loneliness, grief, trauma, family and school difficulties, substance use, and major life transitions, and they draw clients from more than 20 Kansas counties. Care is delivered on an outpatient basis through individual, group, and family counseling. They also run a crisis team that is available around the clock for mental health emergencies.
Individual sessions are shaped around each person’s needs and can take place in an office, during a walk around the campus, while fishing at the on-site pond, or remotely by Zoom or phone, with visit frequency based on the situation. Group therapy brings together four to eight people, usually weekly or every other week, so participants can share support and practice communication and social skills in a structured setting. Short-term family therapy with a licensed clinician focuses on easing conflict and improving communication, including when a relative’s substance use or mental illness is straining the household. Their specialized Anxiety Treatment Program, one of only two such clinics in Kansas, uses gradual exposure to reduce fears and ritualized behaviors, and most participants finish in 16 to 18 sessions.
