Elmhurst Home, Inc. serves adults in the Highland Park and Detroit area with residential and outpatient treatment for substance use disorders, including support for people with co-occurring mental health conditions. Their residential care runs at two separate gender-specific homes, the James Oden Center for men and Naomi’s Nest for women, with short-term stays of 14 to 30 days and long-term stays of 90 days for anyone over 18. They also offer outpatient and intensive outpatient care for Wayne County residents, plus a recovery services program for men. Funding comes through county, state, and community partners, so the recovery program doesn’t require insurance or money, though entry does require a referral from the Institute of Population Health or a parole, probation, or sheriff’s office agent.

Residential days are highly structured and combine weekly individual sessions and group therapy with cognitive behavioral role play, drama therapy, work therapy, anger management, and relapse prevention, along with on-site and off-site AA, NA, and FA meetings. Practical rebuilding is a big part of the program, with GED and literacy classes, life and computer skills training, employment and housing help, parenting classes, family reconciliation work, HIV and STD testing, and community service such as urban farming. Through a dedicated corrections program, they work closely with prison, probation, and parole officials, and some people are paroled directly into their care with access to job training and spiritual support for both residents and their families. Outpatient clients receive psychiatric evaluation, medication review, case management, patient education, and transportation assistance.
