Connecticut Valley Addiction Recovery, Inc. (CVAR) is a nonprofit addiction treatment program serving the Upper Valley region of Vermont and New Hampshire. Addiction medicine physician Dr. Frederick Lord founded the practice in Windsor, Vermont, in 2007 to offer medication-assisted treatment alongside 12-step facilitated recovery for people with substance use disorders. Their care combines medication, counseling, nursing support, and case management, with the aim of helping patients build the skills to sustain recovery over the long term. In 2023, they served 364 patients from 83 communities across the region.
A central part of their approach is addressing the emotional and behavioral issues that often drive substance use, since leaving those problems untreated can make relapse more likely. Individual counseling is shaped around each person’s history and circumstances, while group therapy gives patients the chance to learn from and support one another. Case managers help connect patients with services inside the program and with resources in the surrounding community. Dr. Lord is board certified in addiction medicine, which brings specialized medical oversight to their medication-based treatment.
