About Consejo Counseling and Referral Servs

Consejo Counseling and Referral Services is a behavioral health nonprofit serving Renton and other communities across Washington, with a strong focus on bilingual, bicultural care for Latinx, BIPOC, and underserved clients. They were founded in Seattle in 1978 out of a University of Washington social work project and became the state’s first Latino-based behavioral health organization, with particular attention to Spanish-speaking clients who may have struggled to find care in their own language. Today they treat substance use disorders alongside mental health concerns, and they offer support for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. They are licensed by the Washington Health Care Authority and accredited by the Joint Commission.

Their substance use treatment is part of a broader whole-person model that also includes case management, peer support, and trauma-informed mental health care. People involved with the legal system can receive treatment through partnerships with drug courts, family recovery courts, mental health courts, veterans courts, and community courts, where participants are assessed quickly and placed in care guided by risk, needs, and responsivity principles. Active clients can join therapeutic groups in King, Pierce, Skagit, and Thurston-Mason counties that draw on mindfulness, expressive arts, and community-based activities. Beyond addiction care, they also provide transitional housing, school-based services, programs for children, youth, and families, and a mobile outreach service called Consejo on Wheels.
