About Consejo Counseling and Referral Servs

Consejo Counseling and Referral Services is a bilingual, bicultural behavioral health organization with a location in University Place, Washington, and about a dozen sites across King, Pierce, Skagit, and Thurston-Mason counties. Founded in 1978 out of a University of Washington social work project, they became the first Latino-based behavioral health organization in the state and still center their care on Spanish-speaking, Latinx, BIPOC, and underserved communities. Their services span substance use disorder treatment, mental health counseling, and support for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, along with transitional housing, school-based programs, and services for children, youth, and families. They are licensed by the Washington Health Care Authority and accredited by the Joint Commission.

A major part of their substance use work happens through therapeutic courts, where they partner with drug courts, family recovery courts, mental health courts, veterans courts, and community courts in the region. Participants are assessed quickly and connected to treatment, with trauma-informed mental health care, case management, and peer support coordinated alongside the court process using a risk, needs, and responsivity framework. Active clients can also join therapeutic groups that draw on mindfulness, expressive arts, and community-based activities, with facilitators who build cultural values and lived experience into the work. For families who prefer to receive care in Spanish or want a team that understands their cultural background, this focus is a meaningful part of what they offer.
