About Comprehensive Health and Attitude
Comprehensive Health and Attitude, known as CHAMP Clinic, is an outpatient opioid treatment program in Honolulu, with a second clinic in Wailuku on Maui. They focus on adults dependent on heroin and narcotic pain medications, using methadone maintenance and gradual methadone detox alongside counseling and support services for patients and their families. Their approach is rooted in harm reduction, aiming first to stabilize patients and restore daily functioning, with abstinence from opioids as the longer-term goal. They accept private insurance, private pay, and sponsorship from charitable organizations, and they direct uninsured Hawaii residents to the state’s Med-QUEST program to check eligibility.
New patients come to the clinic daily for dosing and can earn take-home doses over time. Once someone is stable on the right dose, staff can begin addressing other chronic medical and psychiatric concerns, and tapering off methadone is considered case by case when a patient shows sustained abstinence and has solid supports such as a stable home life. Case managers work with patients on both a scheduled and an open-door basis, helping them plan, carry out, and track the changes recovery requires and assessing readiness to reintegrate into the community. Counselors also connect patients with government and community resources for vocational planning, which can be especially helpful for anyone rebuilding work and stability alongside treatment.
