About Community Psychiatric Institute

Community Psychiatric Institute (CPI) is a private, non-profit outpatient behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment center in East Orange, New Jersey, serving adults 18 and older since 1972. They offer person-centered, evidence-based care that encourages abstinence while working within a harm reduction model. Clients set their own recovery goals, which may include stable housing, employment, or greater independence. CPI is licensed by the New Jersey Department of Health and accredited by the Joint Commission, and they run two main tracks: Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient programs for alcohol and drug use, and a full-day mental health Partial Care program.

In the Outpatient Program, clients typically meet weekly with a substance abuse counselor for an hour of individual or group counseling. The Intensive Outpatient Program requires three-hour group sessions at least three days a week, with morning and evening schedules available, plus a weekly individual session. Family counseling and a monthly family support and education group are available, and drug testing is weekly in IOP and random in OP. People with co-occurring mental health conditions can work with specially trained counselors and see a prescriber for psychiatric evaluations and medication monitoring. CPI accepts Medicaid, select commercial plans, Recovery Court and State Parole funding, and a sliding fee scale, and intake appointments are scheduled within 72 hours of referral.
