About Community Health and Counseling Servs

Community Health and Counseling Services (CHCS) is a private nonprofit healthcare organization based in Bangor, Maine. They provide community-based mental health, behavioral health, home health, hospice, and therapeutic treatment foster care to adults and children across a large part of the state. Their Bangor location is a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC), with expansion planned for Dover, Ellsworth, and Lincoln to serve residents of Penobscot, Piscataquis, and Hancock counties. CHCS believes care works best in familiar surroundings where family and friends can take part in recovery, and their staff coordinate with each person’s existing healthcare providers. The organization traces its roots to a Bangor charity founded in 1883.

On the behavioral health side, CHCS supports adults living with severe and persistent mental illness who want to build and keep their independence while living in the community. They also offer intensive help for children and families facing emotional and behavioral challenges, along with adult therapy and behavioral health home services. Services run around the clock, and staff respond to behavioral health referrals within one to two business days. A sliding fee scale and MaineCare certification help make care more affordable, and a WRAP fund helps adults with serious mental illness meet emergency needs that regular systems of care can’t cover.
