Communicare is a community mental health center based in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, serving Breckinridge, Grayson, Hardin, LaRue, Marion, Meade, Nelson, and Washington counties with behavioral health, substance use, and developmental disability services. Founded in 1967 as part of the state’s network of public mental health centers, they serve as a safety net for rural residents and use a sliding fee scale so that no one is turned away for inability to pay. Their addiction care ranges from outpatient alcohol and drug counseling and office-based opioid treatment to a 28-day residential program for women, transitional and recovery housing, and a crisis line staffed around the clock.

Much of their recovery programming centers on mothers. The CARF-accredited EAST Center offers residential treatment for pregnant, postpartum, and parenting women, and qualifying mothers can keep a child with them during their stay. Their opioid treatment program lasts 18 to 24 months and pairs medication with therapy for co-occurring mental health concerns, while women stepping down from treatment can move into Passages, a subsidized housing program with onsite intensive outpatient care, or EasternCare, a recovery residence for mothers with a history of opioid use. They also run programs for people involved with the justice system, including jail-based and six-month outpatient tracks that use Moral Reconation Therapy alongside work on trauma, anger, and parenting, as well as early intervention for teens with alcohol or drug offenses.
