About Center for Healthcare Services
The Center for Health Care Services (CHCS) is a community behavioral health provider in San Antonio, serving children, adults, and veterans across Bexar County who are dealing with substance use challenges, mental health conditions, or intellectual and developmental disabilities. As a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic with more than fifty years of service, they combine addiction, psychiatric, and primary care so people can get help for co-occurring needs in one system. Their care is trauma-informed and person- and family-centered, built on the understanding that past trauma often underlies both addiction and mental illness. They run a 24-hour crisis and substance use helpline, offer a sliding fee scale based on family size and income, and do not turn anyone away for inability to pay.
For adults with serious mental illness who repeatedly cycle through emergency rooms, psychiatric units, or jail, their Complex Care programs use Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) and Forensic Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) teams. Participants work with a dedicated three-person team and a psychiatrist, receiving medication management, intensive case management, substance use treatment, peer support, and individual and group counseling, with eligibility reviewed case by case. CHCS also partners with the San Antonio Police Department to pair clinicians with officers for people who frequently rely on 911. Young people ages 3 to 17 can receive assessment, counseling, skills training, psychiatric care, and family partner support, and dedicated home- and community-based programs serve youth involved with the juvenile probation system.
