About Center for Community Alternatives

Center for Community Alternatives (CCA) is a New York nonprofit whose Brooklyn Wellness Center offers outpatient substance use treatment and medication for opioid use disorder, including methadone, to adults 18 and older. Founded in 1981 as one of the state’s first community-based alternatives to incarceration, they work mainly with people affected by the criminal legal system, and addiction care is one part of that broader mission. Their approach rests on harm reduction and peer leadership. They welcome people who are still using substances as well as those in recovery, and they encourage participants to make changes on their own terms without facing shame or punishment.

At the Wellness Center, outpatient treatment is paired with methadone and other medications for opioid use disorder. They place particular weight on this care for people coming home from jail or prison, when overdose risk rises sharply. Peer-led recovery communities complement the clinical services, and CCA runs similar peer recovery centers in Syracuse and Rochester. Because the organization also provides court advocacy, reentry support, job training, housing assistance, legal help with conviction records, and a trauma recovery program for survivors of violence, someone in treatment can find help with the legal and practical challenges that often come with recovery.
