About Catalyst Clinic

CATALYST Clinic is an outpatient program at Boston Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, serving adolescents and young adults ages 13 to 25 who use substances. Part of BMC’s Department of Pediatrics and its Adolescent Medicine program, they act as a medical home, so young people can receive primary care and substance use treatment in one place. They welcome patients at any point in their substance use, whether or not someone is ready to stop, and they keep their approach confidential, nonjudgmental, and suited to a young person’s stage of development. Families are part of the picture too, with dedicated support and guidance for parents.

Care begins with assessment and diagnosis of substance use disorders, and treatment can include medications for substance use disorders alongside harm reduction counseling and supplies. Overdose prevention education and naloxone are also available. Because many young people who use substances also struggle with mental health, the team provides psychiatric evaluation and treatment, short-term psychotherapy, and case management to coordinate services. Medical care goes beyond addiction to include hepatitis C screening and treatment, HIV screening, PrEP and PEP, STI testing and treatment, and family planning, and patients can connect with other BMC addiction and psychiatry programs when they need additional support.
