About CASPAR House I

CASPAR House I is an enhanced residential recovery program in Somerville, Massachusetts, for adults 18 and older living with both a substance use disorder and behavioral health challenges. They are run by CASPAR (Cambridge and Somerville Programs for Addiction Recovery), a community-based nonprofit founded in 1970 that has been part of Bay Cove Human Services since 2014. CASPAR’s founders helped push for the decriminalization of alcoholism in Massachusetts, and that belief that addiction calls for treatment rather than jail still shapes their non-judgmental, person-centered approach. Across Cambridge and Somerville, their programs range from street outreach and shelter to residential treatment and aftercare housing.

At CASPAR I, residents live in a structured, therapeutic community setting where they work on stabilizing their mental health while building the foundational skills needed for lasting sobriety. A key part of the program is helping each person reconnect with community-based providers, so ongoing care is in place when they move on. Because CASPAR sits within Bay Cove’s larger continuum, people can also access related services such as medically monitored detox at Andrew House, methadone treatment with counseling and case management, and CASPAR’s gender-specific six-to-nine-month residential programs. This connected network can be especially helpful for anyone who is also dealing with homelessness or unstable housing.
