About Calvert County Behavioral Health

Calvert County Behavioral Health is the substance use treatment arm of the Calvert County Health Department, serving residents of Prince Frederick and the surrounding county in Southern Maryland. As a public health program, they focus on making effective treatment and prevention available to people of all ages, including adolescents, young adults, adults, and those living with co-occurring substance use and mental health conditions. Care is outpatient-based, ranging from standard counseling to an intensive outpatient program, with referrals to inpatient treatment when a higher level of care is needed. Clients can come in voluntarily, through a provider referral, or by court order, and Medicaid, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, and most major insurance plans are accepted, with income-based help possible for people without coverage.

Treatment usually begins with a comprehensive behavioral health assessment and continues with individual, group, and family counseling, alcohol and drug education, and urine and breathalyzer testing. For opioid use disorder, they provide medication-assisted treatment with buprenorphine. Their reach also extends into schools and the county detention center, and adolescents are treated separately from adults so younger clients receive age-appropriate care. Beyond clinical services, a recovery support team of peer specialists with lived experience helps people set their own recovery goals, lead self-help and educational groups, and connect with community resources, including employment help through Southern Maryland Job Source.
