About Calumet

Calumet is part of Upper Great Lakes Family Health, a community health center network serving Michigan’s Upper Peninsula that brings medical, behavioral health, and dental care together under one organization. They see patients regardless of their ability to pay, and their behavioral health team includes counselors and addiction specialists who help people recover from dependence on alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, opiates, and other substances. Care is outpatient, with individual and group counseling, psychiatric consultations for medication, and telehealth sessions by computer or phone available across the U.P.

Treatment plans are individualized and may draw on cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, 12-step concepts, mindfulness, family systems work, art therapy, and hypnosis. They also teach skills in emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. This is helpful for people whose substance use is tied to trauma, anxiety, depression, anger, or trouble concentrating, all of which the counseling team treats. Smoking cessation support and counseling for children and teens are also offered, and because primary care providers work in the same system, a routine medical visit can lead directly to a referral for addiction or mental health care.
