About Butler Hospital
Butler Hospital is a psychiatric and behavioral health hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, and part of the Care New England health system. They treat adolescents, adults, and older adults for mental health conditions and substance use disorders, including alcohol, prescription opioid, heroin, and other drug addiction. Their addiction care rests on the belief that anyone who truly wants sobriety can recover, while recognizing that recovery is lifelong and rarely follows a straight line. Care ranges from an acute inpatient alcohol and drug unit and ambulatory detox to a partial hospital program, intensive outpatient treatment, and standard outpatient services.
New patients start with Patient Assessment Services, which helps them choose the right program, whether this is a first attempt at treatment or a return after relapse. Their Recovery Stabilization Program offers six months or more of outpatient medication-assisted treatment for opioid addiction, led by a physician and supported by a therapist, nurse, and case worker, with group and individual therapy, family education, and a gradual handoff of medication management to a primary care provider. Other options include a short-term Transitional Outpatient Program for the months after a hospital stay, treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions, and a HealthPath program for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island members. Teens ages 13 to 17 dealing with addiction, depression, or anxiety can enter an inpatient unit or partial hospital program through self-referral, and the hospital’s BRaIN Program provides TMS, ECT, esketamine, and other interventional psychiatry treatments for hard-to-treat depression, OCD, and PTSD.
