About Bridge
The Bridge is a New York City nonprofit that provides supportive housing and behavioral health care to adults living with serious mental illness, substance use disorders, or both. They run more than 60 programs across the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. They were founded in 1954 by former long-term residents of a psychiatric hospital who formed a self-help collective, and that peer-driven, trauma-informed outlook still shapes their work with people affected by homelessness, incarceration, or institutionalization. Their outpatient care is based in a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic, where a partnership with Ryan Health brings primary medical care under the same roof, and they serve clients regardless of ability to pay.
Addiction treatment is centered in their Center for Wellness and Change, which follows a harm reduction model, so recovery goals may or may not include abstinence. Services there include medication-assisted treatment with buprenorphine, naltrexone, or Vivitrol, individual and group counseling, peer and family support, mandated treatment, and psychiatric care for co-occurring conditions, along with supplies such as Narcan and test strips. They also offer court-mandated DUI and DWI screenings and assessments, outpatient therapy and medication management with telehealth options, and a psychiatric rehabilitation program whose groups include CBT, DBT, and mindfulness. For people who struggle to engage with clinic-based care, mobile and community teams deliver substance use and behavioral health treatment in the field, including dedicated outreach to adults over 55 who are experiencing homelessness.
