About Beginning Step Inc

Beginning Step is an outpatient addiction treatment program in Westland, Michigan, serving adults with Medicaid who are dealing with substance use or co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. They were founded in 2006 as a sister agency to Safe Step, a long-running sober living provider in Southeast Michigan, and they share staff with that program. Their approach is person-centered and built around the stages of change, so clients move through treatment at their own pace. They offer intensive outpatient and standard outpatient programs, with or without recovery housing, and stays can range from two weeks to two years, with the option to enter or leave at any level of care.

Care starts with a full biopsychosocial assessment, including evaluation and referral for psychiatric symptoms, followed by a treatment plan shaped by the client. Individual and group therapy focus on core issues, triggers, and relapse prevention, alongside educational groups on addiction and co-occurring conditions. A notable feature is that clients keep the same therapist across every level of care, while peer mentors with lived recovery experience and case managers help with employment, finances, transportation, and links to legal and health resources. Free and reduced-cost recovery housing provides a structured, smoke-free sober setting with random drug testing, nearby support meetings, and monthly social activities.
