About Aroostook Mental Health Center

Aroostook Mental Health Center (AMHC) is a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic serving northern and eastern Maine, with substance use outpatient services in Caribou among their 27 locations across Aroostook, Hancock, and Washington counties. For more than 60 years they have provided integrated mental health and addiction care built around the client, coordinating closely with other health and community providers. Their substance use services cover addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions through outpatient counseling, intensive outpatient groups, rapid access to medication for opioid use disorder, and an 18-bed residential program in nearby Presque Isle. They accept most insurance, including MaineCare and Medicare plans, offer a sliding fee scale based on income and family size, and don’t turn anyone away for inability to pay.

Treatment begins with an assessment based on the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria to match each person with the right level of care and build a plan around the changes they want to make. Outpatient clients can receive individual and family counseling, up to nine hours a week of intensive group therapy, case management, peer recovery support, and nursing care, along with MOUD/MAT paired with counseling. The residential program runs 30 to 45 days and includes daily individual and group therapy, Sunday family sessions, weekly coordination with community providers, and practical skill-building for everyday recovery. They also offer the Driver Education and Evaluation Program (DEEP) for people facing OUI charges, care coordinators who connect clients with housing, transportation, and follow-up care, and the Micah Wall Recovery Scholarship for people who need financial help paying for treatment.
