Aroostook Mental Health Center (AMHC) in Houlton, Maine, is an outpatient site of a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic that has served Aroostook, Hancock, and Washington counties for more than 60 years. They treat substance use disorders alongside co-occurring mental health conditions, using an integrated approach that keeps the client at the center of every decision about their care. In Houlton, care includes standard outpatient counseling and intensive outpatient (IOP), and the wider agency also runs an 18-bed residential program in Presque Isle for people who need round-the-clock structured treatment. Most insurance, including MaineCare and Medicare plans, is accepted, and a sliding fee scale based on income and family size means no one is turned away for inability to pay.

Treatment starts with an assessment based on American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria, which matches each person to the right level of care and builds a plan around the changes they want to make. They also offer Maine’s Driver Education and Evaluation Program (DEEP) for people facing an OUI, along with care coordinators who help manage transitions such as discharge from a hospital and connect clients with housing, transportation, and peer support.
