About Aroostook Mental Health Center
Aroostook Mental Health Center (AMHC) in Calais, Maine, is one of the outpatient sites of a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic that has served Aroostook, Hancock, and Washington counties for more than 60 years. They treat substance use disorders alongside co-occurring mental health conditions, offering outpatient counseling and intensive outpatient programming (IOP) for adults and their families. Care begins with an assessment based on the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) model, so treatment plans reflect where each person is and what they want to change. They accept MaineCare, Medicare plans, commercial insurance, and private pay, offer a sliding fee scale, and don’t turn anyone away for inability to pay.
Treatment options include individual and family counseling, integrated care for co-occurring disorders, and intensive group counseling of up to nine hours a week for people who need more support while keeping up with work or childcare. They provide rapid access to medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD/MAT) combined with counseling, along with case management, peer recovery support, and nursing care. Care coordinators can help build a personal plan and connect people with housing, transportation, and support after a hospital stay, while the Driver Education and Evaluation Program (DEEP) serves people addressing an OUI. Those who need a higher level of care can be connected to the organization’s 18-bed residential program in Presque Isle, and a recovery scholarship fund helps people facing financial barriers.
