About Area Substance Abuse Council
Area Substance Abuse Council (ASAC) is a nonprofit provider of substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery services, with 14 locations across seven Eastern Iowa counties, including their presence in Maquoketa. They work with people facing substance use disorders and problem gambling, guided by a mission centered on brain health, individualized care, harm reduction, and advocacy. Their continuum includes standard outpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization or day treatment, and residential care, along with medication-assisted treatment. Everyone begins with a substance use or gambling assessment, after which a counselor recommends the level of care that fits.
Treatment is self-paced, so the length of stay or participation depends on each person’s progress rather than a fixed timeline. Residential care is offered at four gender-specific homes in Cedar Rapids and Clinton, including programs for men, women, pregnant women, and mothers who want to keep their children with them during treatment, with group work on stress management, decision-making, communication, and coping skills. Every patient is paired with a peer recovery coach who has been through ASAC’s programs, which gives people steady mentorship from someone with lived experience. After treatment, care navigators help with childcare, transportation, employment, and housing, and qualifying families can apply for ASAC’s transitional apartment communities.
