About Area Substance Abuse Council
Area Substance Abuse Council (ASAC) is a nonprofit based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, providing substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery services across 14 locations in seven Eastern Iowa counties. Their approach centers on individualized care, harm reduction, and human connection, and they treat both substance use disorders and problem gambling. Levels of care include standard outpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization or day treatment (offered in Dubuque and Clinton), and residential treatment, with medication-assisted treatment also available. Care begins with an assessment, after which a counselor reviews treatment options, and lengths of stay in every program depend on each person’s needs and progress.
Residential care is split across four gender-specific houses. In Cedar Rapids, Lost & Found Recovery Center serves men 24 and older, and Heart of Iowa serves women 18 and older, including pregnant women and mothers with children. In Clinton, King House serves adult men and Hightower Place serves adult women, including those with children. Residents take part in individual counseling and group sessions on stress management, decision-making, communication, coping, sober living, and life skills. Every outpatient patient is paired with a Peer Recovery Coach who is a former patient, and after treatment ASAC offers care navigation for childcare, transportation, housing, and employment, along with transitional apartments for families at The Way Home and New Directions Housing.
