About Amethyst House
Amethyst House is a not-for-profit United Way agency in Bloomington, Indiana, providing residential and outpatient treatment for adults struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. A group of recovering community members founded them in 1980 to offer safe housing for people in early recovery, and their work still treats addiction as a disease while emphasizing trauma-informed, evidence-based care, personal accountability, and involvement in Twelve Step groups. Care includes separate men’s and women’s residential homes, intensive outpatient treatment, and continuing care, with priority admission for pregnant women and people who inject drugs. They hold CARF accreditation for community housing and adult outpatient treatment, as well as certification from Indiana’s Division of Mental Health and Addictions.
Residents aged 18 and older live in historic downtown homes, where they find a job, work toward financial stability, attend outpatient treatment, build a support network through AA or NA, and receive weekly case management and life skills training. Women may be able to bring children up to age 6, depending on space, and incoming residents need at least five days of sobriety unless they are transferring from a hospital or detox. Outpatient care begins with an ASAM-based assessment and an individualized plan, followed by small groups of 8 to 10 people that draw on Motivational Interviewing, Stages of Change, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, with services adjusted up or down as progress allows. Individual counseling addresses trauma, depression, anxiety, and other co-occurring issues, family members can receive counseling and support, and fees follow a sliding scale, with several Indiana Medicaid plans and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield accepted.
