About American Indian Health and

American Indian Health & Family Services (AIHFS) is a nonprofit health and community wellness center in southwest Detroit that has served a seven-county area of Southeast Michigan since 1978. As a Title V Urban Indian Health Organization and Federally Qualified Health Center, they blend traditional Native American healing and spiritual practices with contemporary Western medicine across medical care, behavioral health care, and community and family wellness services. Their guiding goal is Minobinmaadziwin, or “The Good Life,” which they pursue by tending to physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental health together. They hold CARF accreditation as a certified Health Home, meaning primary care, behavioral health, and social support services are coordinated around the whole person.

Cultural connection runs through much of their work, with referrals to traditional healing, sweat lodge ceremonies, drumming classes, and teachings on language, customs, and traditional crafts such as ribbon skirts and cradleboards. Since 1992, they have also offered youth and young adult programming that helps Native young people explore their identity and build healthy support networks. Care is open to everyone, with or without insurance, and American Indians enrolled in a federally recognized tribe, their first- or second-degree descendants, and Alaska Natives can receive services at no cost. Others may qualify for a sliding fee scale or financial hardship discounts, and eligible clients living within 35 miles who have no other way to get there can use their transportation service for appointments and programs.
