Alternative Paths is a community behavioral health agency in Medina, Ohio, that has served Medina County since 1989. They care for adults and youth living with mental illness, substance use disorders, or both, and they run the county’s 24/7 crisis and behavioral health helpline. For alcohol and drug concerns, their care is outpatient, ranging from individual and group counseling to an intensive outpatient program (IOP). They also operate the Medina County Opiate Response Team, which reaches out to people after an opiate overdose to help connect them with treatment.
Their IOP begins with a comprehensive assessment and runs at least nine hours a week, with groups meeting three days weekly and individual counseling, case management, and crisis support added as needed. People with opiate dependence can join a naltrexone (Vivitrol) program run with the Medina County Health Department, where Alternative Paths provides the counseling and case management and coordinates monthly injections at the health department. Substance use case managers help with housing, food, employment, criminal justice coordination, and links to self-help groups, and peer supporters with lived recovery experience offer encouragement and teach practical recovery skills. For people with co-occurring conditions, a psychiatric team provides medication management and monitoring, along with help getting low-cost prescriptions through their Central Pharmacy program.
