About Altadena Recovery Center
Altadena Recovery Center is a nonprofit, 12-step-based intensive outpatient program in the foothills of Altadena, California, serving people from Pasadena, Arcadia, Monrovia, and across the greater Los Angeles area. Founded by Shirley Bennett, James Power, and Lynnette Kyle, they are staffed largely by people in recovery themselves, and they keep a small, close-knit setting where clients are known by name. They help adults struggling with alcohol, prescription drugs, and illicit substances, and their IOP is built for people who need more than weekly counseling but want to keep up with work, school, or family. As a 501(c)(3), they also work to subsidize treatment for people who might otherwise be unable to afford it.
Care begins with a clinical and medical assessment that shapes an individualized plan, and each client is paired with a case manager who coordinates services and helps remove obstacles along the way. Programming combines individual therapy, therapist-led process groups, relapse prevention groups, chemical dependency education, regular 12-step meetings rooted in AA and NA principles, and drug testing for accountability. They also run parenting classes, anger management groups, and trauma-informed domestic violence groups, and they connect clients with housing, employment, education, and vocational resources. Before discharge, the team builds an aftercare plan covering step-down care, sober living options, meeting schedules, and ongoing therapy, with groups held on weekdays and Saturday mornings.
