About Alleghany Highlands Community Services

Alleghany Highlands Community Services is the public Community Services Board for Covington, Alleghany County, Clifton Forge, and Iron Gate in Virginia. Established in 1983 and licensed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, they serve as the area’s publicly funded safety net for people facing substance use, mental health, co-occurring, and developmental challenges. Their care is recovery-oriented and community-based, with an emphasis on dignity, personal choice, and hope. Substance use care is outpatient, ranging from individual and group counseling to an intensive outpatient program, alongside mobile crisis response and around-the-clock emergency support.

Everyone starts with a confidential assessment, which is used to match them with the services that best fit their situation. Options include education, family counseling, transition and intensive case management, peer recovery support, adolescent services, drug and alcohol testing, a recovery court program, and Project Link. Pregnant women and women with dependent children who use substances can be seen within 48 hours, and people who inject drugs can be seen within 14 days. While these priority clients wait for detox, residential, or intensive outpatient openings, they can receive interim counseling, TB screening, and referrals. Weekday open-access hours, veteran-focused services, and agency transportation help make care easier to reach.
