About Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council of

The Alcohol and Drug Awareness Council (ADAC) is a nonprofit that has served Deep East and Southeast Texas since 1978, with an outpatient counseling office in Nacogdoches and its main office in Lufkin. They view chemical dependency as a chronic, progressive disease that can be managed with long-term care, and their treatment is abstinence-based, with family involvement and participation in 12-step or other local support groups built in. Their services span prevention, screening, and referral, along with state-licensed outpatient treatment for adults and adolescents and nonclinical recovery support. Their Outreach, Screening, Assessment and Referral (OSAR) service is free and helps people across 15 East Texas counties who can’t afford treatment find the right level of care, and treatment itself can be fully state funded for those who qualify, with most Medicaid plans also accepted.

The adult outpatient program serves people 18 and older who don’t need medical detox or inpatient care, including those who have already completed detox elsewhere. It typically lasts three to six months, with one to two individual sessions a month and one to two education or therapy groups a week, and length is adjusted as clinical staff track each person’s progress. Their youth program follows a similar structure for ages 13 to 17, and young adults up to 21 may join when appropriate, adding twice-monthly 90-minute family education groups and home visits for teens in the Cannabis Treatment Program. Beyond formal treatment, recovery coaches in their Youth Recovery Communities and adult Recovery Support Services help participants, including adults with co-occurring mental health conditions, with education, job preparation, goal planning, and building sober connections, and a youth drop-in center offers a safe place for social activities and peer support.
