About Alamo Area Resource Center Inc
Alamo Area Resource Center (AARC) is a San Antonio, Texas, health and social service organization serving LGBTQ+ people and those affected by HIV across the city and surrounding counties. They were founded in 1990 to meet the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS, and in 2016 they opened their Health Equity Clinic, the first nonprofit LGBTQ clinic in San Antonio. Their care centers on equity, inclusion, and a nonjudgmental setting, with outpatient services that include primary care, HIV specialty care, sexual health services, and gender-affirming care. Visits are by appointment only, and walk-ins are not accepted.
Their HIV care takes a whole-person approach, pairing physicians and nurses with mental health counselors and social service caseworkers, along with nutritional guidance and help with transportation. On-site labs, an on-site pharmacy, and patient navigation make it easier to manage appointments, prescriptions, and the wider medical system, and staff can help uninsured clients check eligibility for medical and medication assistance programs. They also offer free HIV and STI testing, both on-site and through at-home kits, as well as PrEP and PEP for HIV prevention and hormone therapy for transgender, non-binary, and gender-expansive patients. They accept Medicaid, Medicare, and many commercial plans but do not take self-pay, so uninsured patients seeking primary care are referred to the free Pride Community Clinic, which meets at AARC’s location twice a month.
